Why do we study Business Studies, Economics and Computing?

Business Studies

Everything in life involves Business. Think about that new top you bought last week and then think of what businesses made it possible for you to be wearing it right now? The obvious ones are the Shop and the Manufacturing plant but what about the Cotton growers? The Label makers? The Delivery company? Health & Safety? Even the companies that manage the finances of all those businesses. Thinking about all those processes and people allows you to begin to understand about what Business Studies is all about. Business is a major part of everyone’s life and anybody who has a good idea about how businesses work are at an immediate advantage in the future.

Computing

Information Communications Technology (ICT) refers to the study of any technology that uses telecommunication to store, transmit or access digital information. It focuses on the way that modern technology affects our society and how we communicate. Ok, so it might sound a little complicated, but if you enjoy browsing the internet, happen to own a smartphone or often spend time watching digital television, you’ve already got a pretty good handle on the types of technology ICT covers. Furthermore, if you’ve ever talked to someone on Skype, or sent an email or text rather than a letter, then you’ve probably also got some idea of how modern technology has changed the way we interact with each other.

Economics

Economics is about choice and the impact of our choices on each other. It relates to every aspect of our lives, from the decisions we make as individuals or families to the structures created by governments and firms. The economic way of thinking can help us make better choices. Economics is the study of how societies use scarce resources to produce valuable commodities and distribute them among different people. Behind this definition are two key ideas in economics: that goods are scarce and that society must use its resources efficiently.

The Business, Economics and Computing Programme of Study

Key Stage 3 – Years 7 and 8

Computing

Introduction to Computing & ICT skill building: Students will learn basic computing skills and become confident users of standard software packages including the Microsoft Office Suite, Doddle, Adobe Design Suite and Scratch programming tools. They will understand the importance of clear file structures and be able to set up and maintain their own areas of the network. Students will develop practical ICT skills through the successful completion of practical projects that are designed to both support and challenge all ability levels.

Key Stage 4 – Years 9, 10 and 11

Computing & ICT

The Edexcel BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Information and Creative Technology has been designed primarily for young people aged 14 to 19 who may wish to explore a vocational route throughout Key Stage 4, but it is also suitable for other learners who want a vocationally focused introduction to this area of study. It has been developed to inspire and enthuse learners to become technology savvy producers of technology products and systems and not just consumers. It will give learners the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the Information Technology sector and some aspects of the creative industries, e.g. electronic publishing or multimedia production. It allows for a flexible choice of units to meet the needs of learners with different interests and inclinations. It also gives learners a more focused understanding of Information and Creative Technology through the selection of optional specialist units.

Business Studies & Economics

Year 9 – Students will complete a skill building access year where they learn about the basic operations of a business and its role in the local economy through primary research and practical experience. Working in groups students will produce a portfolio of work showing evidence of their application of various business models and theories to real life businesses in the local community.

GCSE Business

Students will follow the Edexcel GCSE Business Studies syllabus.  The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in Business consists of two externally-examined papers: Theme 1 Investigating a Small Business and Theme 2 Building a Business. Through studying the GCSE 9-1 Business qualification students will apply their knowledge and understanding to different business contexts. These include businesses ranging from small enterprises to large multinationals and businesses operating in local, national and global contexts. You will develop an understanding of how these contexts impact on business behaviour, you will learn to use business terminology to identify and explain business activity and develop the skills to apply business concepts to familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

GCSE Economics

OCR’s GCSE (9–1) in Economics is a fully linear course and consists of two mandatory components that are externally assessed. There will be two question papers assessing the two components. Each question paper will have 20 multiple choice questions and short case studies with related short and medium response questions as well as the opportunity for extended writing.  The syllabus covers two main themes.

IFS Financial Education Level 2 Certificate

Students follow three units of the course and are assessed using a combination of multiple choice and case study based questions. In order to successfully complete the course students must pass each unit - they have two opportunities to do this. The course focuses on both personal and business finances and looks at the structure of the UK banking sector and the challenges it has faced over recent years. Students are expected to develop a confident understanding of both business and ethical issues surrounding banking and investment and the impact this has on businesses, individuals and the UK economy as a whole.

Key Stage 5 – Years 12 and 13

AS/A Level Business

The Edexcel Advanced GCE in Business is structured into four themes and consists of three externally examined

papers. In this course students will be introduced to business in Themes 1 and 2 through building knowledge of core business concepts and applying them to business contexts to develop a broad understanding of how businesses work. Breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, with applications to a wider range of contexts and more complex business information, are developed in Themes 3 and 4 in Year 13, requiring students to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues.

Applied General Business

The AQA Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Business will give learners the opportunity to learn and understand a broad range of business and entrepreneurial knowledge and skills associated with working within a business environment. In the certificate qualification, students will undertake a programme of assessment designed to assess not only business knowledge and understanding, but also the way in which this knowledge and understanding can be applied to shape their own practical skills in thinking and realising students’ own plans about business. Unit 3 Entrepreneurial Opportunities is a synoptic assessment unit which will allow students to demonstrate their practical initiative.  The Extended Certificate in Year 13 will allow the opportunity to build on the knowledge and understanding developed in the certificate qualification.  Unit 5 Developing a Business Proposal is the synoptic assessment unit. Drawing on skills and knowledge from all other units, it will enable students to put together a solid business proposal.

AS/A Level Economics

The Edexcel Advanced GCE in Economics is structured into four themes and consists of three externally examined papers. Students build knowledge and understanding of core economic models and concepts in Themes 1 and 2, and then build on this and apply their knowledge to more complex concepts and models in Themes 3 and 4. The aims and objectives of the Edexcel Advanced GCE in Economics are to enable students to develop an interest in, and enthusiasm for the subject; appreciate the contribution of economics to the understanding of the wider economic and social environment; develop an understanding of a range of concepts and an ability to use those concepts in a variety of different contexts; and use an enquiring, critical and thoughtful approach to the study of economics and develop an ability to think as an economist. Students are also expected to understand that economic behaviour can be studied from a range of perspectives and develop analytical and quantitative skills, together with qualities and attitudes that will equip them for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of adult and working life.

AS/A Level Accounting

The specification emphasises both financial accounting and the recording of past events, and management accounting as a means of planning and decision making. Students should appreciate that these are not totally distinct areas of study and that there is an interrelationship between financial accounting and aspects of management accounting. Students will develop an understanding of the principles of ethical behaviour which inform the actions of all those working within an accounting environment. Students must demonstrate a good understanding of the double entry model and accounting principles and concepts as these form the foundation of all financial accounting techniques. They will also need to demonstrate quantitative skills that are relevant to the subject.  Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the formulae used for computations, carrying out computations and using the results of computations to inform judgements, solve problems and make decisions. Students must focus on developing their ability to write effectively so that they can report to stakeholders, making logical arguments and providing sound judgements based on analysis of available evidence taking account of financial and non-financial factors. Students should be encouraged to keep up to date with financial news including announcements concerning the performance of leading UK businesses, and be given the opportunity to investigate their published accounts.

IFS Financial Studies Level 3 Certificate/Diploma

Students develop further the themes around budgeting and financial planning that were introduced in Units 1 and

2. They will briefly recap the purpose and benefits of personal budgets and flexible financial plans and explain how using these can help an individual to achieve and maintain sustainable personal finances. Students then consider some of the financial products and services available to help individuals to achieve that goal.

Edexcel BTEC Business L1/2 Award

The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Business has been developed in the business sector to encourage personal development of knowledge and skills relevant to the business world through practical participation in a range of vocational business activities. It will give learners a wider understanding and appreciation of the broad range of business specialisms through selection of optional specialist units and encourage learners to develop their people, communication, planning and team working skills by having the opportunity to select from optional units available in the qualification structure. It will provide education and training for employees in the business sector. It will give opportunities for business employees to achieve a nationally recognised level 1 or level 2 vocationally-specific qualification. Full-time learners will be given the opportunity to enter employment in the business sector or to progress to other vocational qualifications, such as the Pearson BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Business. Learners will also be given the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

OCR Cambridge Technical Certificate in IT Level 3 Certificate/Extended Certificate

IT is at the heart of everyday life, at home, work and in our leisure time, from computer graphics and control systems to communications and problem-solving, IT has an ever increasing role to play. This course offers a wide choice of units including hardware, software and online. It includes practical activities in all units - learn, do, review and allows students to develop transferable skills for the workplace or future studies.

Homework in Business, Economics and Computing

KS3 – Students are set homework weekly to complement theory covered in class. Formal assessments take place once per half term with results recorded centrally and both deep marking and DIRT taking place.

KS4/5 – Students are expected to complete 4 hours of prescribed homework per week. They are also expected to supplement learning in lessons with extensive reading and research outside of class.

Enrichment Opportunities in Business, Economics and Computing

There is much opportunity for enrichment in the curriculum area. We have a program of guest speakers invited to coincide with specific areas of the curriculum and to give students a view as to how their chosen subject fits into the works for further education and work.

Gifted and More Able Students in the Business, Economicsand Computing Department

The dynamic and constantly changing nature of Business Studies, Economics and Computing provides ample opportunity for G&T students to stretch their understanding of their chosen field.

Further reading and articles to support and extend learning are provided on the department website Ecothunk.uk and students are expected to research and contribute reading outside of lessons to their classmates.

G&T students are given the opportunity to further stretch their understanding of their chosen subject apart of the structure and content of A Level courses and it is expected that this will differentiate in the final assessment and outcome of the 2 year courses.

All students should display a passion for their KS5 studies and demonstrate the ability to deepen their understanding of the often complex models and theories covered in class.
