The curriculum area also offers the following subjects to students in key stage 4 leading to formal GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications: Business Studies, Economics and Personal Financial Education. These courses are highly popular with students as they are relevant to modern living and help students to prepare for adult working life. In the Sixth Form, a wide range of academic and vocational qualifications are offered to cater for the various different needs and preferences of our young people. We offer the opportunity to study A levels in Accounting, Applied Business, Business Studies, Economics. We deliver the ifs Certificate in Financial Studies which leads onto the full Diploma in Year 13 and carries UCAS points equal to those of A levels. Finally, we also offer BTECs in Business, Travel & Tourism and Public Services at both levels 2 and 3. The Business Education department at Barnhill is unusually large and the main advantage of this is that we are in a position to offer A suitable qualification for every type of learner. In this way, we find that students’ diverse needs are well catered for and that they are more likely to be successful here at school as well as later in life.
ICT & Computing
ICT is taught to all students in KS3. Our aim is to ensure that by the end of Year 8, all students can use ICT securely and confidently. These practical skills help students to prepare for cross-curricular ICT demands in key stage 4 courses as well as equipping them with necessary skills for using new technologies. In Year 11, students can choose to study Computing GCSE if they choose it as an option. We also offer BTEC ICT in the sixth form at both levels 2 and level 3. These are extremely popular choices as students recognise the importance and usefulness of learning about Computing and ICT in the 21st century.
