Viral Makwana

Linux engineer at Rackspace

Viral attended Barnhill between 2003-2009. After finishing his A Levels he decided to seek full-time employment but due to his lack of experience in the ICT industry he offered to work for free at his first company on the condition he was offered a full-time paid contract after 6months. Following this he was offered a full-time paid contract and he stayed there for around 18months or so before moving to Rackspace where he still currently is employed.

What are you doing now: I work as a Linux engineer at Rackspace (one of the largest hosting companies in the world). I get to use amazing new technologies daily to help our clients ensure that their systems are tuned to the standard we expect. Most of our clients are some of the largest companies in the world, such as EA, BBC, Metro Bank etc. Also, recently we co-founded a project called OpenStack to build an open-source cloud platform.

Words of advice for fellow pupils at Barnhill: Always have belief in your own ability. Others may doubt you, but ALWAYS retain self-belief as this will see you through and make you successful!
